Winchester Model 1894 Lever-Action Repeater

Probably the most famous and beloved sporting rifle in history, the Winchester Model 1894 (U.S. Patent 524,702/1894) was originally designed by John M. Browning to fire black powder rounds, but was quickly adapted – principally by changing the barrels from mild steel to nickel steel – to handle the new smokeless cartridges. One such round was the .30-30, which led to one of the gun’s most popular names, the Winchester Thirty-Thirty. The Model 1894 was produced in five main versions: Standard Sporting (26-inch barrel), Fancy Sporting (26-inch barrel), Extra-lightweight (22- or 26-inch barrel), Carbine (20-inch barrel) and Trapper (14-, 15-, 16- or 18-inch barrel). The tubular magazine held a maximum of eight rounds in the standard version and six in the Carbine version. The original Model 1894 remained in production until the 1990s and standard models were supplemented by numerous commemorative issues, with well over 2,500,000 being produced in total. Direct developments were the Model 55, a simplified version of the Model 1894, which was in production from 1924 to 1932, and the Model 64, a further refinement of the Model 55, of which 67,000 were made between 1933 and 1957, followed by a further small number in 1972-3.
